Soon after the launch of the new Strobe Poker on Ongame, network owner Amaya has announced a rake reduction of 20%.

Only two Strobe pools are currently running: NL10 and NL30. At NL10, the standard rake of 6.66% is reduced to 5% on Strobe; at NL30, 5% rake is reduced to 4%.
When higher level Strobe pools roll out, the 4% rake will also apply. Rake caps remain the same at $3.
Unusually, Strobe seats five players at each table, a throwback to 2011 when all short-handed Ongame tables were 5-max. The lower seats should keep players moving around tables with less wait at times when the player pool is lower.
Fast-fold games in general generate more rake than standard games: Average stack sizes tend to be higher, leading to higher average pot sizes. Ongame’s five handed tables should also mean more flops, as players play more hands, creating more post-flop situations and larger pots.
25%+ increases in rake/hand are commonly observed in fast-fold games. The rake reduction should compensate for this, bringing observed rake closer to that of normal tables.
Of course, the higher rate of hands—a player at a single table can play two to three times more hands over an hour—means that, even with the reduction, Strobe tables should deliver significantly more rake per player hour.
The rake reduction strategy makes eminent sense for Amaya. It is late to market with a fast-fold poker variant, and needs to attract players from other sites.
In January Ongame ended its segregation policy, bringing players from all skins into a single liquidity pool. The introduction of Strobe helps make the most of that liquidity.
Site traffic at Ongame has declined by ~50% in the last six months, according to the latest PokerScout traffic figures. Average cash game players are down from over 1500 to 750, and the rate of decline has accelerated since the New Year.

A poker world without Tom “durrrr” Dwan seems almost unfathomable.

A truly legendary figure in the arc of online poker’s history – not to mention the Full Tilt saga and televised poker cash games – the thought of durrrr not being a part of poker's impending return to the US even borders on blaspheme, really.
As he told us in London yesterday, though, there’s a definite possibility he won’t be around in the game forever. At the very least, the grind of a half-decade of poker is taking its toll:
TD: “I definitely don't love the game as much as I used to. But I think that if I was playing any other game for a living, I would have lost my mind long ago, so obviously I still think poker is a pretty awesome game.
“But lots of time I play three days in a row, and I play for 20 hours straight on the fourth day because the game is really good. And yeah, obviously I'd rather be sitting on the beach that fourth day, looking at the sun and all that, but well, sometimes I make trade-offs when the game's really good, so it's okay.”
PL: What else would you do if you didn't play poker?
TD: That's a conversation for another time, because I've got a few things on my mind.

It was 2007 that a punk rocker known as Jon “Skalie” Kalmar scared the living crap out of the final table members of the World Series of Poker Main Event. Kalmar ultimately finished in fifth place for a $1,255,069 score. Not bad for a self confessed degenerate gambler from the tough streets of Blackpool.

Kalmar has earned his living through gambling ever since that fabled day and he's decided to tell all in a new series of posts on Lil Dave Nicholson’s blog.
An excerpt:
Gambling is in my Blood, My Dad did it, my granddad did it and I am sure his father before him liked a little dabble too. The fact is everyone does. There might be people out there saying “I don’t gamble” but that just bollocks. Everyone does, just they don’t realise it.
Maybe it’s the odd pound on the pools or lottery disguised in the thought that you “donated to good causes”. Well those people kid themselves.
The excitement of the lottery may not be what it once was but many a ‘Non gambler’ would sit around the radio or TV on a Saturday evening checking the Footy scores hoping to bag eight score draws or 6 numbers from machine Arthur.
And while they do, they are not thinking about funding Opera companies and poor inner city play grounds either, much more likely they are thinking about phoning the boss Monday morning to tell him “You can stick your poxy job, you fat bald fascist bastard!”.

Rank Group Plc owner of the Grosvener United Kingdom Poker Tour, finally rubber-stamped a deal to purchase 19 land-based casinos and three non-operating licenses from their competitors Gala Coral.

The deal, worth £179 million, means that Rank now boasts 54 casinos and 12 non-operating licenses in their UK brick-and-mortar portfolio.
After the addition of the Gala Coral casinos, Ian Burke, Chairman and CEO of Rank, declared his intention to roll out its ‘G Casino’ format in a further eight cities.
This is good news for the GUKPT, which is currently competing with Genting Poker Series and PokerStars.com's UKIPT.
But the discussions in the boardroom didn't stop the action on the felt. GUKPT stalwart Martin Bader lifted the trophy at the first GUKPT event of the 2013 calendar when he defeated 396 other players on his way to the £56,000 first-prize in London recently.
Online starlet, Marc ‘dean23price’ Wright, took fifth and Marvin Rettenmaier stumbled out in 16th.

Two Merge Gaming Skins, Overbet.com and Iron Duke, have unexpectedly closed in the past week after a couple months of stability for the network.

The Overbet.com website has posted a message stating that the skin has been purchased by a third party and that player funds are safe. The IronDuke website remains operational, but it has released a similar message to its current players and potential new players. Both websites have advised players to move to the preferred partners of the Merge Gaming Network: Players Only, Sportsbook, and Carbon. Although player funds remain safe, VIP points will not be able to be redeemed or transferred to another site.
The close of Overbet and Iron Duke signals the further decline of the Merge Gaming Network in the increasingly stringent United States market. Several skins have closed their doors or have moved onto other networks, including Lock Poker, Black Chip Poker, RPM Poker, and most recently, Hero Poker. The Network has experienced peak traffic of 1282 in the past 24 hours and recent PokerScout data has not shown a big increase from this number. Despite its losses, the Merge Gaming Network remains the 3rd most popular site for US players behind the Revolution Gaming Network and Bovada/Bodog.
The Merge Gaming Network has been steadily declining since its peak during the aftermath of the Black Friday indictments. Throughout the past two years, the Network has undergone major changes to remain relevant in the constantly evolving US online poker. These changes have included the switch from rakeback, the loss of major sites like Lock Poker, and the constant change in payment processing. The network might also lose another skin in the near future as PokerView has been soliciting potential buyers in the past month.
Although the recently closed sites have not offered any reason for the abrupt departures, sources have speculated that the lack of revenue and the support for the “preferred partners” have led to decline of smaller skins within the network. Nevertheless, the closing of two more skins has become signs of tough times for the Merge Gaming Network.

Illinois’ latest gambling expansion bill represents the state’s second attempt to implement a full slate of internet gambling.

Legislation that would legalize online gambling in the state of Illinois was approved by a state senate committee on Wednesday with a full Senate vote expected as soon as Thursday.
Just hours before the bill passed through the Senate Executive Committee by a 10-4 margin, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn delivered his state budget address where he announced a staggering $400 million would be cut from the state’s education budget.
During his speech Quinn made it clear that he welcomed gambling expansion under the proper conditions. “Any enhancement that we enact to gaming revenues this year should be dedicated to education.”
He also emphasized his desire that regulatory oversight be increased in any legislation to expand gambling. “It must have tough ethical standards, a campaign contribution ban on casino operators, and no loopholes for mobsters.”
Quinn has vetoed two previous attempts by state lawmakers to expand gambling in the state with the most recent veto occurring on Monday. “This is a bad bill for the people of Illinois,” the Governor wrote. “I will not approve of any gaming expansion without strong ethical standards, comprehensive oversight and dedicated resources for education.”
Lawmakers have tried to appease the Governor with this latest legislation by inserting procedural guidelines and restrictions aimed at curbing corruption and earmarking a substantial amount money for education.
The bill allows for additional land-based casinos in the state—including one in the city of Chicago—and slot machines at the city’s airports and Illinois horse racing tracks.
Illinois was the first state in the US to offer the sale of lottery tickets over the internet after it received a favorable response from its request of the US Department of Justice to clarify its stance on the Wire Act.
The DOJ revised its opinion in a letter released in December 2011 stating that it was their belief that the 1961 law only restricted wagering on sporting events. Illinois moved quickly and began selling lottery tickets over the Internet in March 2012.
Two months later, Illinois lawmakers considered adding online gambling but the measure was tabled in spite of strong legislative support.

In SkillBet Poker, you and your opponent are dealt the same hand at identical tables versus the same computer opponents. For example, you and your opponent are both dealt pocket aces, and you win $10 from the computer players and your opponent wins $5. You would win the difference between your winnings and your opponent’s, which is $5. Because you played the hand more skillfully, you are rewarded. It's as simple as that!

Each week, the Global Poker Index publishes the standings of the top 1,000 players in its Player of the Year race. Once a month, PokerNews will take an in-depth look at the top 10 players' results and the recent tournaments that have caused a splash in the standings.

A player's score is composed of up to 11 tournament results during the calendar year. Of those 11 results, up to six will come from Jan. 1 through June 30 and up to five will be from tournaments starting from July 1 through Dec. 31. Like the Global Poker Index Rankings, all tournaments must have a buy-in of at least $1,000 and contain at least 21 entrants to be eligible in comprising a player's score.
Dan Shak is back on top of the standings, following his cash in the WPT L.A. Poker Classic Main Event. Hot on his heels is Micah Raskin, who placed third in a high roller event there as well.

WinPoker.com, on the iPoker network, is adding Bitcoin support for deposits and withdrawals, pokerfuse can exclusively reveal.

It is the first time a poker room on any major online poker network has added first-class Bitcoin support to the cashier.
Deposits can be made by sending BTC directly through the cashier on the WinPoker website to the room’s Bitcoin wallet. As soon as the system receives the funds—typically within ten minutes—the money will be credited to the player’s account.
If players store their wallets on smartphones, depositing can be as simple as scanning a QR code.
Unlike other online poker Bitcoin implementations, the money held on the WinPoker cashier will be converted into the player’s traditional account currency as soon as its received—WinPoker allows accounts in US dollars, UK Sterling, Euro and the Indian Rupee—so the player is not required to speculate on the tumultuous Bitcoin currency exchange market.
To withdrawal, players simply request cashouts direct to their Bitcoin wallet. Withdrawal times are expected to be much the same as traditional withdrawal methods.
